The Jewels in the Walls
by Daryl LaMare Cornish, Jr.

About 1907, in the town of Charlotte's Web, there were two young people who had just gotten married and moved into a mansion on the hill - Matthew and Miss Velma.

Also in the town of Charlotte's Web was a jealous woman who lived down the hill - Diane. Diane didn't like them at all. She hated their guts because SHE wanted the mansion on the hill. She knew that inside the walls, the mansion was made of diamonds.

The mansion's original owner was a sea captain. Legend had it that Captain Herrera had found buried treasure and hid that inside the walls of her home.

Diane was the only person in the town who knew Captain Herrera's secret.

Years later, Matthew and Miss Velma mysteriously died. A neighbor, DeVionte Harrell, reported smelling a sweet, rotten odor coming from the house.

When Miss Victoria, the local sheriff, came to investigate, she looked through the window but couldn't see anything.

She knocked on the door slightly and it s-l-o-w-l-y opened.

The first thing she saw was Matthew's head on a stick poking out from the fireplace and the remains of Miss Velma's body chopped up INSIDE the fireplace! Her burnt arm reached out from the ashes, as if she were reaching for help.

Miss Victoria's assistant, Miss Marisol, screamed to the top of her lungs.

"A-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-g-h!" She passed out on the porch.

The sheriff and her assistant figured out that the couple had been murdered! But they had no suspects. As time went on, there were rumors that the ghosts of Matthew and Velma were haunting the mansion.

It was said that voices could be heard whispering, "Diane did it..."

At midnight, lights would flicker mysteriously inside the house. Shadows would appear.

     "A-g-g-g-g-g-g-h" (male voice)

     "A-g-g-g-g-g-g-h" (female voice)

Diane bought the mansion, not realizing that it was haunted. Late that very night, she began tearing down the walls trying to find Captain Herrera's legendary riches.

     CHOP! CHOP!

     Diane heard footsteps.

     CHOP! CHOP!

     Diane heard voices.

     "Why-y-y-y-y-y u-s-s-s-s? We never did anything to y-o-u-u-u-u-u- ...."

She thought for a minute. "Did I hear something? Naw, I'm just imagining things."

She continued chopping down the walls again.

     CHOP! CHOP!

     "D-i-a-a-a-a-a-n-e! Why-y-y-y-y-y u-s-s-s-s? "

The voices were circling her now! She swung her axe and the lights went out. Now she was REALLY scared. She was completely in the dark.

     "D-i-a-a-a-a-a-n-e! Why-y-y-y-y-y u-s-s-s-s?"

A man's head floated by. Next, she felt an arm wrap slowly around her neck. It started choking her!

Diane began staggering, trying to catch her breath! She fell against the fireplace and hit her head! Blood poured from the wound in her temple! She sank to the floor, pleading, "Please don't kill me! Please don't kill me!"

By now the dead man's head was floating directly in front of Diane. He laughed wildly.

"Who are you? Who ARE YOU???"

Diane looked over to a nearby mirror. It was smeared with blood. Then letters began to appear. They read: YOU KNOW WHO THIS IS. YOU KILLED US FOR THE JEWELS IN THE WALLS. REMEMBER? REMEMBER??

Diane suddenly remembered and screamed, "Matthew and Miss Velma???"

The last thing Diane heard before her head rolled down the steps was...

CHOP!!!
